Pet Loss Support in India: what to know
In India, the support you find after a pet dies depends on language, distance and knowing where to ask. This page lays out the national picture: support and crisis lines, what counseling usually costs, how people mark a pet's death and which rules apply to a burial or scattering. The 3 city pages add local weather, customs and nearby options.
From Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore to rural communities, grief after a pet looks much the same across India: a quiet house, a routine with a gap in it and people nearby who may not understand. This guide explains the support that exists nationally and locally, honestly and without a sales pitch. If you'd like options by email, the form takes a minute.
We cover 3 communities in India, from Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore.

How people in India mark a death
With cremation chosen for roughly 80%[1] of deaths in India, many families here mark a death with a celebration of life rather than a somber service. Some grieving pet owners find that tone helps; laughing about the dog who stole a whole roast is part of remembering. Others aren't ready to celebrate anything yet. If your grief is still raw, a quieter gathering is just as valid.
Wikipedia: Cremation by country (citing National Geographic) (2014) publishes the India rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
Support costs near India, from free to paid
Pet loss support in India is often informal: family, friends, online communities and the staff at pet funeral providers. Paid counseling is available in larger cities, priced per session. Because there's no reliable data on what it costs, the table shows published aftercare prices instead, since those decisions tend to come first.
Space and housing in many Asian cities mean home burial is rarely possible, so aftercare and remembrance are usually arranged through a pet funeral provider, sometimes with a columbarium niche families can visit. That place can become an important part of grieving. The table shows typical published prices in the region.
| What | Typical cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Online groups and peer support | Usually free | Often available in English |
| Private counseling | Per-session fee, varies | Ask about pet loss experience |
| Tokyo: pet under 5 kg, communal / individual | JPY 14,300 / JPY 22,000[2] | Tax included |
| Singapore: 10–20 kg dog, communal / private | SGD 260 / SGD 480[3] | Columbarium niche extra |
| Hong Kong: 20–30 kg dog, individual | HKD 3,000[4] | Premium packages cost more |

Time off, burial and scattering in India
A ritual can feel spoiled if you're worried it breaks a rule. The points below cover what we know for India about burying a pet at home and scattering ashes. When in doubt, private land with the owner's permission is the simplest place for a quiet goodbye, and a planting in a pot works anywhere.
What to do while the grief is new
- Get the full story from whoever was with them: the sitter, the boarding kennel or the vet. Knowing what happened, and that they weren't alone, often matters most.
- Forgive yourself for being away. Pets often die during an ordinary workday, overnight or when their people are on a trip. Not being there isn't a failure.
- Hold your own goodbye once you're home. Visit the grave or the ashes, look through photos, or ask the clinic whether a viewing is still possible.
- Thank the person who cared for them. Chances are they're upset as well, and quietly afraid you hold them responsible.
- Put into words what you'd have said if you'd been there, in a note or a card you keep.
- Talk it over with someone when the fact that you weren't there keeps circling back. Pet bereavement lines are used to exactly this worry. You're welcome to ask us for support options as well.
Rituals and remembrance in India
Anniversaries matter. Pick one date to mark, whether it's the day they died, their birthday or the day they came home, and choose one small thing to do each year: a walk, a donation, a photo shared with people who loved them too. Having a plan makes the day easier to face, and it keeps their memory part of your year in India.

Questions people ask
Where can I scatter my pet's ashes in India?
Private land with the owner's permission is the simplest choice. Parks, beaches and other public land often have their own rules, so check first. Choose a quiet spot away from paths and water, and consider keeping a little back in a keepsake. A scattering with a few friends can become a meaningful ritual.
Is pet grief taken seriously by counselors?
Increasingly, yes. Research now places grief after a pet alongside grief for people, and many bereavement counselors work with it. Ask before booking whether they've supported people after a pet's death. You should never feel you have to defend why you're grieving, and it's fine to try someone else if you do.
What if I can't afford a counselor in India?
Free support covers a lot: pet bereavement lines, online groups, general listening services and your vet. For counseling, ask about sliding-scale fees, check whether an employee assistance program at work offers free sessions, and ask your doctor what local services exist. If you're in crisis, crisis lines in India are free at any hour, and grief after a pet is a valid reason to call.
How can I help a child grieve a pet?
Use plain, honest words, let them ask questions and give them a small role in the goodbye, such as drawing a card or choosing a photo. Tell the school if they're upset. Consider extra help from a school counselor or family doctor if, weeks later, a child still can't sleep, avoids school or seems stuck.
How many communities do you cover in India?
We currently have local pet loss support guides for 3 communities in India, including Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore. Each page covers the kinds of support that tend to exist there, local seasons and customs around remembrance, costs, and practical steps for the first weeks after a loss.
Where can I find pet loss support in India?
Start with your vet, the nearest emergency animal hospital and your local humane society or animal charity, since they often host groups or know who does. Larger cities such as Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore are more likely to have regular in-person groups. Anywhere in India, online groups and phone lines are available, and many counselors now work by video.
