Money and love
Why money worries feel so heavy right now
Few things feel worse than doing the math while your pet is dying. Many people feel guilty for even noticing the cost, as if a cheaper choice would mean they loved their pet less. It doesn't. What you spend on a goodbye has nothing to do with how much your pet mattered.
Surprises add stress at the worst moment. Standard pet insurance usually covers euthanasia but not cremation or burial, so most of the aftercare bill comes out of pocket. Seeing the whole range in advance lets you decide calmly, in the order that matters to you. Most families end up paying for some kind of aftercare: in a survey of 2,043 US dog and cat owners, 68%[2] had chosen cremation for at least one past pet.
Using the planner
How to use the memorial budget planner
Check the items you're considering: euthanasia (clinic or home), pickup, cremation, an urn, jewelry, a memorial stone, a paw print, a farewell gathering, a memorial tree. Private cremation and an urn start checked. Each checked item shows a low and high amount that you can edit to match a real quote. The total updates as you go, and you can print or copy the summary to share with family.
Uncheck anything you don't want. A plan with just clinic euthanasia, communal cremation and a free memorial at home is a perfectly good plan. There's no separate communal line, so type a communal quote over the private cremation amounts.

The default amounts
Where the default amounts come from
Defaults come from published US price studies, mainly CareCredit's 2025 cost study, plus typical add-on ranges for things like pickup and paw prints. In the US, private dog cremation averages $260[3], while in-clinic euthanasia averages $139[4] and a home visit about $410[5]. Prices run higher in expensive cities and lower in rural areas, which our local pages cover. Where you buy matters too: the UK's Competition and Markets Authority review of vet services found 89%[6] of cremation buyers never compared providers.
$670 home; $399 clinic[7]
Keepsakes vary most. One industry report says personalized urns alone run from about USD 50–1,000+[8], so the planner uses a modest default and lets you adjust it.
A worked example
Example: a cat's goodbye on a careful budget
Say you're planning for an elderly cat. You choose in-clinic euthanasia and private cremation so the ashes come home, a simple wooden urn, and a paw print. You skip jewelry and a stone, and plan a farewell at home that costs nothing but a candle.
clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[9]
The planner's cremation and euthanasia lines start at dog figures, so type the cat averages over them. With those and modest amounts for the urn and paw print, the planner would show a range of a few hundred dollars. Switching to a home visit adds roughly two hundred dollars; switching to communal cremation takes a good chunk off. Seeing the trade-offs side by side helps a family agree without anyone feeling they've let the cat down.

Deciding together
Talking about costs with family without a fight
Money conversations after a pet dies can go wrong quickly. One person wants the engraved urn and the paw print; another is quietly worried about the rent. Neither is loving the pet more. Printing the planner's summary and going through it together turns an emotional argument into a list you can agree on line by line.
It can help to agree on one thing that matters most to each person and fund those first, then drop the rest. If the conversation keeps stalling, our article on preparing a support plan before a pet dies has ideas for having it earlier, while everyone is calmer.
Limits and next steps
What the planner can't tell you, and what to do next
The planner gives typical ranges, not quotes. It can't know your vet's fees, what's included in a local cremation package, or whether your area charges extra after hours. Always ask for a written total before you agree to anything. If you're comparing aftercare types, the aftercare options comparison ranks them against what matters most to you.
If money worries are tangled up with grief or guilt, you're far from alone, and it's something a pet loss support group will understand. You can also tell us your budget and we'll email options, or read about the kinds of support available. To see how other readers weighed cost against keepsakes, visit the poll results page.

Questions people ask
How much does it cost to say goodbye to a pet in the US?
By our estimate, a typical dog total is about $399 with clinic euthanasia and private cremation, or around $670 with a home visit[7], based on CareCredit's 2025 averages. Communal cremation lowers the cost, while urns, jewelry and memorial stones raise it. Prices vary a lot by city, so ask for written quotes.
Does pet insurance pay for cremation?
Usually not under a standard policy. Many insurers cover euthanasia when it's medically necessary but exclude cremation and burial. Some offer end-of-life add-ons that reimburse a set amount toward aftercare. Check your policy wording, or ask your insurer directly before you need it.
Is choosing communal cremation a sign I didn't care enough?
No. Communal cremation is a respectful, common choice, and many owners pick it because they don't feel the need to keep ashes. How you remember your pet matters far more than what you spend. A photo, a collar or a planted tree can be just as meaningful as an urn.
Can I plan these costs before my pet dies?
Yes, and many people find it easier. Planning while you're calm means you're not making money decisions in tears at the clinic. You can copy or print a summary from the planner and share it with family, so everyone knows what's been agreed when the time comes.
