Pet bereavement support for Oviedo families

Oviedo, Asturias

What grieving a pet in Oviedo can be like

Losing a pet in a city where many people live alone or with elderly parents can be especially hard, because a pet is often a daily companion. Grief can feel as heavy as other losses. Give yourself time, perhaps in the Campo de San Francisco park or on a quiet route up Monte Naranco, and talk to someone who knew your pet.

Asturian families often mark loss with gatherings, meals and time together, and grief after a pet's death is no different. You might share stories over dinner, plant something in a family garden, or light a candle on the anniversary. If sadness stays heavy for weeks, pet loss support groups, online communities and counselors who understand animal loss are worth reaching out to.

Children in Oviedo often talk about a pet's death at school before they've made sense of it at home. It helps to tell the teacher briefly what happened, so a sudden tear in class gets a kind response instead of confusion. School counselors are used to helping children through first experiences of death, and for many children a pet is exactly that first experience.

Oviedo is home to about 220,000 people.

For a second opinion on price, Santander (103 miles), Valladolid (131 miles) and Bilbao (147 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Oviedo routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

50.11%[2]

In 2024, cremations overtook burials in Spain for the first time: 50.11% of deaths (218,538 cremations).

7.5%[3]

7.5% of UK adults whose bereavement was the death of a pet met criteria for prolonged grief disorder (PGD).

34.5%[4]

34.5% of bereaved pet owners were told 'it's just a pet'.

56.7%[1]

56.7% of bereaved pet owners in the RSPCA survey could not find the support they needed.

We built the this numbers from RSPCA and Hyland et al., 'No pets allowed: Evidence that prolonged grief disorder can occur following the death of a pet', PLOS ONE (2026), and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

A pet at home in Oviedo

Funeral customs in Spain and pet grief

Cremation is now the majority choice in Spain, at about 50.11%[2] of deaths, but burial and graveside visits still matter to many families. If you grew up with a grave to visit, grieving a pet whose ashes sit on a shelf can feel unfinished. Some people create a place anyway, such as a marked spot in the garden or a memorial stone, so the grief has somewhere to go.

Source for the Spain number: Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). Nobody publishes a pet cremation rate for Oviedo, so the human figure is the best local signal available.

How Oviedo's climate shapes remembering

If you're planning an outdoor memorial, a planting or a scattering in or around Oviedo, choose a season and time of day that's comfortable for everyone. There's no deadline. Many families keep the ashes at home for months and wait for weather, or an anniversary, that feels right.

What's free, and what isn't, in Oviedo

Across Europe, pet loss support is less formal than in the UK or US. Groups tend to be online or run by animal charities, vets and pet cemeteries, and many are free. Private grief counseling is paid and priced per session. The table shows published aftercare prices from several European countries, since families in Oviedo often face these decisions in the same week as the loss.

The full price table by product is on our Asturias page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Practical rules worth knowing in Asturias

Most of what helps with grief needs no permission at all: a candle, a letter, a walk. The exceptions are a burial or scattering outdoors, which Asturias and local authorities may regulate, and time off work, which usually rests on your employer's policy. The main points we have for Asturias are below.

A gentle plan for the weeks ahead

  1. Tell children plainly that the pet has died and won't be returning. Skip 'went to sleep', since it can turn bedtime into something scary.
  2. Give everyone a job in the goodbye. One child draws a card, another picks the photo, someone else chooses the garden spot.
  3. Keep daily routines steady for children and other pets. Predictability helps both feel safe.
  4. Let the school know if a child is upset, so teachers can respond kindly rather than be caught off guard.
  5. Watch your other animals. A surviving pet may wander the rooms or go off food for a bit. More attention and the usual routine tend to settle them.
  6. Plan a small family ritual for a month from now, so there's something to look forward to rather than only something to get over.

Ways Oviedo families remember a pet

A pet's farewell in Oviedo can be simple and private: a moment at home with family before collection, or a small gathering in a garden or village house. Some families like to be present at the cremation, others prefer not to be. There's no right way. When you ask for options, tell us whether you'd like to attend any part, and we'll email you choices that fit.

Questions people ask

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Oviedo?

Usually yes. Santander is about 103 miles away, Valladolid is about 131 miles away and Bilbao is about 147 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Why does the Oviedo page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) reports about 50.11%[2] of Spain residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Is it normal to grieve my pet more than some people I've lost?

Yes, and it's more common than people admit. In a 2026 UK study, 21.0%[6] of people who had lost both a pet and a person named the pet's death as their most distressing loss. Research comparing the two found closeness, not species, is the strongest predictor of how much it hurts. A pet shares every ordinary hour, which is exactly why the gap feels so big.

Why do I feel so guilty after putting my pet to sleep?

Because you were responsible for them and had to decide with incomplete information. Guilt is one of the most common reactions after euthanasia, even when the timing was right. Most pets now die this way: in a large US study, 83.0%[7] of dog deaths were by euthanasia. Writing down what you knew on the day, and talking it through with someone, usually eases the loop.

Can I get time off work after my pet dies?

Pet bereavement leave is uncommon everywhere and rarely set by law, so it depends on your employer. Check whether your contract or handbook mentions compassionate or personal leave, then ask for specific days rather than open-ended time. Some employers now offer pet-specific leave, usually between one and three days, so it's worth asking even if nothing is written down.

Why does grief feel worse in the evenings?

Because that's often when your pet's presence was strongest: the walk after work, the cat on your lap, the last trip outside before bed. The routine is still in your body even though they're gone. It can help to put something new into that hour, such as a call, a short walk or an online group that meets in the evening.
