What grieving a pet in Pamplona can be like
Family is central to life in Pamplona, and a pet's farewell often brings relatives together, whether at home, at the vet or later when the ashes are returned. Some people like a quiet ceremony; others simply share memories over a meal. There's no single right way. When you contact us, tell us what you'd like, including whether you'd want to be present at any stage, and we'll email options for Navarre.
Children in Pamplona often grow up with pets as part of a large extended family, and a pet's death may be their first experience of loss. Honest, simple explanations are kinder than saying the pet went away. Including them in a small farewell, such as choosing a photo, drawing a picture or planting a flower, helps them understand. Parents and grandparents are entitled to their own grief as well, even while comforting the little ones.
Mid-sized cities like Pamplona often have community events that aren't labeled as grief support but work that way: a shelter's fundraising walk, a community garden workday, a volunteer morning at an animal rescue. Being useful alongside other animal lovers, without anyone asking how you're doing every five minutes, can steady you. Choose one event a few weeks out, so there's something on the calendar that isn't about loss.
Pamplona is home to about 201,000 people. Bilbao, roughly 72 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Pamplona run from there.
Nearby, we also have local pages for San Sebastian (39 miles), Bilbao (72 miles) and Zaragoza (89 miles, a larger centre), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

What local memorial customs mean for your grief
In Spain, about 50.11%[1] of people are cremated, and local customs are changing quickly. Many families now hold informal gatherings, share photos online and mark anniversaries in their own way. That makes room for pet loss, too. A short message to friends, a photo shared with a few words or an evening walk on the anniversary can all be part of grieving openly.
That Spain rate is a human one, published by Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). We quote it for Pamplona only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Grieving through the Pamplona year
Daylight changes through the year can shift grief without you noticing. When evenings draw in, the empty hours after dark often feel longer; when days lengthen, you may find more energy for a walk or a planting. Watching for that pattern helps you plan: arrange company for the darker stretch and save outdoor rituals for the lighter one.

What's free, and what isn't, in Pamplona
If you live in Pamplona but grieve in another language, look for support in the language you think in. Online pet loss groups meet in English, German, French, Dutch and other languages, and they cost nothing. A counselor who works by video in your first language can be worth the fee, because grief is hard enough without translating it. Ask the price per session before booking.
The Navarre price table breaks costs down by product; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

What Navarre allows for burial and scattering
Most of what helps with grief needs no permission at all: a candle, a letter, a walk. The exceptions are a burial or scattering outdoors, which Navarre and local authorities may regulate, and time off work, which usually rests on your employer's policy. The main points we have for Navarre are below.
Getting through the first month
- Tell a teenager straight away and in person if you can. Hearing the news from a sibling or by text can feel like being left out.
- Ask what they'd like to do instead of handing them a task. One teen wants to be there for the burial; another prefers to put something down in writing alone.
- Expect grief to look like irritability, or like pulling away. Teenagers often grieve behind a closed door, among friends or on a screen.
- Share your own sadness in small doses. Seeing an adult cry and carry on shows them grief is survivable.
- Give school a heads-up if exams or big deadlines are near; a quiet word to one teacher is enough.
- Watch for weeks of withdrawal, slipping grades or any talk of things being hopeless. If those show up, speak to the school counselor or your doctor.
Ways Pamplona families remember a pet
Pamplona is a sociable city, and people spend much of their time outdoors, in plazas, parks and cafés. When a pet dies, the change in routine can be noticeable, and the loss can feel lonely even among friends. It's normal to grieve for weeks. Talking to people who knew your pet, and spending time in places you shared, can help. Online support groups in Spanish are also available.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Pamplona?
Usually yes. San Sebastian is about 39 miles away, Bilbao is about 72 miles away and Zaragoza is about 89 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Where are the providers that serve Pamplona actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Bilbao, about 72 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Pamplona and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Is cremation common in Spain?
For people, yes: about 50.11%[1] of Spain deaths end in cremation, according to Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Pamplona follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
What is anticipatory grief?
It's grief that starts before a pet dies, often during a long illness or old age. In the RSPCA survey, 75.4%[6] of owners experienced it. It can bring sadness, irritability and guilt about feeling sad while your pet is still here. That's normal. Many people find it helps to plan a few good days together and to ask the vet what the end might look like.
Where can English speakers in Pamplona find pet loss support?
Start with your vet, who may know English-speaking counselors or expat groups locally. International pet loss communities online meet in English, and video counseling across borders is common, though licensing rules differ, so ask. Expat forums and community groups in Pamplona are also worth a message; someone has usually been through it and can tell you where they found help.
Can I get time off work after my pet dies?
Pet bereavement leave is uncommon everywhere and rarely set by law, so it depends on your employer. Check whether your contract or handbook mentions compassionate or personal leave, then ask for specific days rather than open-ended time. Some employers now offer pet-specific leave, usually between one and three days, so it's worth asking even if nothing is written down.
