Pet Loss Support in the United Kingdom: what to know
From London, Birmingham and Leeds to rural communities, grief after a pet looks much the same across the United Kingdom: a quiet house, a routine with a gap in it and people nearby who may not understand. This guide explains the support that exists nationally and locally, honestly and without a sales pitch. If you'd like options by email, the form takes a minute.
Many people in the United Kingdom feel they should be over a pet's death sooner than they are. There's no national timetable for grief, and no local one either. What we can offer is a clear map: where support exists, what's free, how to request leave from work and ideas for remembering them. Start with the section that answers today's question and come back for the rest.
We cover 40 communities in the United Kingdom, from London, Birmingham and Leeds to smaller towns.

How we calculated this
The sum of our per-city estimates for the 40 communities in the United Kingdom on this site: each city's population ÷ national average household size × the national share of households with a pet. Households with several pets count once.

How people in the United Kingdom mark a death
With cremation chosen for roughly 83.0%[1] of deaths in the United Kingdom, many families here mark a death with a celebration of life rather than a somber service. Some grieving pet owners find that tone helps; laughing about the dog who stole a whole roast is part of remembering. Others aren't ready to celebrate anything yet. If your grief is still raw, a quieter gathering is just as valid.
The cremation figure for the United Kingdom comes from Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024). It counts people, not pets, so treat it as a guide to local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
What pet loss support costs in the United Kingdom
Grief can cost you at work as well as at home. A survey by the RSPCA, 77.4%[2] of respondents felt employers underestimate the impact of pet loss. A day of annual leave or unpaid time off is the hidden cost for many people in the United Kingdom. Asking your manager for compassionate leave costs nothing, and the worst answer is no.
In the UK, the most-used pet bereavement support is free. The Blue Cross Pet Bereavement Support Service offers phone, email and webchat support from trained volunteers, and Samaritans answer on 116 123 at any hour. Private counseling is paid, and accredited pet-loss specialists are scarce: one count found only about 80[3] in private practice. The table shows the aftercare prices families in the United Kingdom often face at the same time.

Before an outdoor goodbye in the United Kingdom
If there's any chance you'll move in the next few years, think about that before a home burial in the United Kingdom. Many families later wish they'd chosen something portable, like ashes in a keepsake or a memorial stone that can come along. That isn't a rule, just a common regret worth hearing now. The official points for the United Kingdom are below.
In the UK, the Blue Cross Pet Bereavement Support Service offers free support by phone, email and webchat, and Samaritans answer on 116 123 at any hour. There's no statutory right to time off after a pet dies, but many employers grant compassionate leave if you ask. Burying a pet at home is generally allowed on land you own, away from water sources; check with your council if you're unsure.
What to do while the grief is new
- Let your other animals sniff or sit with their companion if that's possible and feels right. Some owners find it helps the survivors settle.
- Keep feeding and walking times the same so the pets you still have get their usual day.
- Expect changes in behavior, such as searching, calling out, sleeping in the old spot or seeming unsettled. Most of it eases within a few weeks.
- Don't rush a new companion for them. Let the house settle into how it is now before adding anyone else.
- Make room for your own grief, too. Looking after the remaining pets can push it aside, so deliberately give yourself time to feel it.
- Call your vet when one of the others goes off their food or looks poorly for longer than a couple of days.
Ways the United Kingdom families remember a pet
A memory box is a quiet ritual that works anywhere: a collar, a tag, a clipping of fur, a favorite toy, a photo and a note from each person in the family. Children in the United Kingdom often find it easier to talk while they're choosing what to put in it. Keep the box somewhere you can open it on hard days.

Questions people ask
How many families in the United Kingdom have a dog or cat?
By our estimate, about 6,015,000 dog- or cat-owning households live in the United Kingdom communities we cover. We add up per-city estimates from population, household size and national ownership rates. It's a reminder that pet loss is common here, even when it's grieved quietly.
Where can I find pet loss support in the United Kingdom?
Start with your vet, the nearest emergency animal hospital and your local humane society or animal charity, since they often host groups or know who does. Larger cities such as London, Birmingham and Leeds are more likely to have regular in-person groups. Anywhere in the United Kingdom, online groups and phone lines are available, and many counselors now work by video.
How many communities do you cover in the United Kingdom?
We currently have local pet loss support guides for 40 communities in the United Kingdom, including London, Birmingham and Leeds. Each page covers the kinds of support that tend to exist there, local seasons and customs around remembrance, costs, and practical steps for the first weeks after a loss.
What if I can't afford a counselor in the United Kingdom?
Free support covers a lot: pet bereavement lines, online groups, general listening services and your vet. For counseling, ask about sliding-scale fees, check whether an employee assistance program at work offers free sessions, and ask your doctor what local services exist. If you're in crisis, crisis lines in the United Kingdom are free at any hour, and grief after a pet is a valid reason to call.
Where can I scatter my pet's ashes in the United Kingdom?
Private land with the owner's permission is the simplest choice. Parks, beaches and other public land often have their own rules, so check first. Choose a quiet spot away from paths and water, and consider keeping a little back in a keepsake. A scattering with a few friends can become a meaningful ritual.
Is pet grief taken seriously by counselors?
Increasingly, yes. Research now places grief after a pet alongside grief for people, and many bereavement counselors work with it. Ask before booking whether they've supported people after a pet's death. You should never feel you have to defend why you're grieving, and it's fine to try someone else if you do.
